Massachusetts School Climate Policy

During the 2021-2022 school year, there were 883,815 students enrolled in K-12 public schools in Massachusetts. There are 289 school districts that serve 1,854 K-12 schools. About 50% of students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. There is a policy directly addressing school climate by administering a voluntary survey to students in grades 4, 5, 8 and 10 that aims to analyze engagement, safety and environment. Other policies include those addressing anti-bullying, emergency response planning, safe and supportive school frameworks, mental health support, parent involvement, anti-discrimination and suicide awareness/prevention. There is a policy regarding civics and history where all eighth grade public school students showcase student-led civics projects in order to demonstrate an understanding of civic engagement, citizenship and community service. Massachusetts one policy that relates to media literacy is that media literacy skills will be taught to students as they relate to history and civic engagement.
