Maryland School Climate Policy

 

There are 25 school districts in Maryland with 1,428 public K-12 schools. There were 858,519 K-12 students enrolled in public schools during the 2020-2021 school year. About 43% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches. Maryland has a comprehensive school climate policy that is an educational accountability program. Maryland schools have policies that address bullying prevention, emergency safety planning, school safety, suicide prevention, weapons on school property, banning of corporal punishment, positive behavior interventions, and behavioral counseling. There is a social media policy enacted in 2019 that mandates the development of safety practices for the use of digital devices in classrooms. Maryland has a unique program devoted to educating law enforcement that works in schools with a cultural competency model training curriculum

Maryland Code 7-203 Education accountability program.

An educational accountability program shall include at least three school quality indicators that measure the comparative opportunities provided to students or the level of student success in public schools, one of these measures is school climate surveys.

Baltimore City school police officer means any person who, when acting in an official capacity, is authorized by law to make arrests and who is a member of the Baltimore City School Police Force, who are employees of and appointed by the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners.
